The Mental Health Foundation Young Leaders programme

The MHF Young Leaders are a diverse group of young people from across the UK with a wealth of personal and lived experiences. Young Leaders inform the Foundation’s work with families, children and young people.

The MHF Young Leaders programme is run in partnership with Leaders Unlocked. This exciting programme enables young people to shape and influence the work of the Foundation at all stages of development and delivery. MHF Young Leaders provide input across our communications and digital activities, programmes, policy and research.
“Mental health is one of the things I'm passionate about and keen to tackle especially with my past with poor mental health and I don't want anyone to suffer like I did.” (MHF Young Leader)

How are MHF Young Leaders involved in the Foundation’s work?

MHF Young Leaders come together for co-design days which involve discussion and design of the Foundation’s mental health development work in programmes, research, policy and digital communications.
Young Leaders offer advice and input as experts-by-experience to ensure the Foundation’s reaches young audiences effectively.  Peer research carried out by Young Leaders allows the Foundation to represent the views of young people from across the country, presenting insights and analyzing findings with a youth perspective as a group. Young leaders inform new programme areas and advise on policy recommendations to ensure our work reflects the diverse realities for young people today.
“It’s so lovely to be welcomed by the MHF Young Leaders team. Working with people who are keen to create ways that protect the mental wellbeing of others in various communities is great and it means a lot to me to share my perspective. Joining has encouraged me to remain hopeful about the future and I’m super excited to continue building with this wonderful group of people! I’m so grateful to have something to look forward to every week.” (MHF Young Leader)

“To be part of the MHF Young Leaders family means everything. I only just joined recently, but it has given me the space to grow in ways I could have never imagined, whether it’s having the confidence to go for things I wouldn’t usually or feeling free to be vulnerable. Having access to such a group is rare and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for everyone involved.” (MHF Young Leader)

The Foundation is excited to continue working with Leaders Unlocked over the coming years, to embed the voice of young people throughout our work in meeting the mental health challenges of the future.

“I’m so glad that I’ve been able to join the MHF cause at this time. I feel it’s really important to speak up about your feelings, even if you don’t, it’s important to feel you’re not alone. MHF is perfect because they don’t care what your background is, they welcome everyone. I can’t wait to work more with MHF and everyone in the group is AMAZING!!” (MHF Young Leader)
